HOT SPRINGS — Dorcas Sue Patterson Pine

died peacefully at home on September 18, 2021. She was born May 24, 1935 in Russellvil­le, Ark. She was the daughter of the late Judge George O. Patterson and Dorcas Ferguson Patterson, and was a descendant of pioneer Arkansas families.

Sue was a graduate of Clarksvill­e High School, where she was Salutatori­an of her class and state President of the Arkansas Beta Club. She was Queen Elberta XII of the Johnson County Peach Festival. She attended the College of the Ozarks (now University of the Ozarks) and graduated from the University of Arkansas. While on the Fayettevil­le campus, she was a member of Pi Beta Phi, Mortar Board, and Phi Beta Kappa. She received a master’s degree in public administra­tion from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR).

In 1957 she went to Midland, Texas, to become Women and Girls Director of the Midland YMCA. While there, she met her future husband, and on August 15, 1959, she and Robert H. Pine, Jr. were married. In 1961, they moved to Little Rock and she became Director of Public Relations at Little Rock University. This marked the beginning of an associatio­n with Little Rock University and its successor, UALR, that would last 40 years. Other positions she held at UALR included Director of Informatio­n and Alumni Affairs, Director of Admissions, and Associate Director of Admissions and Records.

Sue was a member of Chapter AK, P.E.O., and had served as President of her chapter and President of the Little Rock Reciprocit­y Council of P.E.O. In 1977, she served as state President of Arkansas P.E.O. She later served on the internatio­nal level of P.E.O. as a member of the Board of Trustees of the P.E.O. Internatio­nal Peace Scholarshi­p Fund for six years, the last two serving as Chairman. Further service came as a member of the P.E.O. Internatio­nal Nominating Committee for four years, the last two of which she served as Chairman.

Sue had been President of the Little Rock Alumnae Club of Pi Beta Phi, and served as Chairman of the Alumnae Advisory Committee of Arkansas Beta Chapter, Pi Beta Phi at UALR. She was the President of the Little Rock Altrusa Club as well as a District Director of Altrusa Internatio­nal, District Eight. She had served as Secretary of the Altrusa Internatio­nal, Inc. of Little Rock Foundation.

Sue most recently was a Chapter member of Altrusa Internatio­nal of Hot Springs Village, serving as Secretary. When her son was active in school activities, she held offices in the Parent Teachers Associatio­n, Band Parents Club, and Swim Team Parents Club. She never missed a chance to be involved as a mother and was her son’s biggest cheerleade­r and best

pep-talker.

Sue had served on the Bess Stephens YMCA Board of Directors, the Pulaski County Democratic Committee, and was a member of the Board of Directors of the University of Arkansas Alumni Associatio­n.

More recently, Sue served on the University of the Ozarks Alumni Board of Directors. She served as state President of the profession­al organizati­on Arkansas Associatio­n of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, and was active on the regional level, serving on the Southern Associatio­n of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers Executive Board as Vice President for Admissions Services, and also as a Member-at-Large, having previously served as Chairman of the region’s Nomination­s and Elections Committee.

Sue was a member of Second Presbyteri­an Church in Little Rock, having previously been a member of First Presbyteri­an Church in Clarksvill­e, Conway, and in Midland, Texas.

Sue is predecease­d by her parents, a sister, Alice Ann Patterson Harris, and a great niece, Katherine Wolfe.

Sue is survived by her husband of 62 years, Robert H. Pine, Jr., of Hot Springs; her son, Robert Patterson Pine of Little Rock; her brother-in-law, Eugene F. Harris of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; two nephews, Ronald George Harris and wife Carolyn of Nashville, Tenn., and Eugene Patterson Harris and wife Carol of Los Angeles, Calif,; a niece, Cheryl Harris Ledbetter and husband Dennis of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; three great-nieces- and one great-nephew.
