FORT SMITH — Mary Carolyn Moreland Terry,

age 97, of Fort Smith, Ark., passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 7, 2021. She was born in Tyronza, Ark., on February 12, 1924, to Dr. William Hubert Moreland and Monte Arie Howell Moreland.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Dudley Rich Terry; and her sisters, Dorothy Lee Moreland Jones, Patricia Jean Moreland, and Martha Jane Moreland Dewbre. Carolyn is survived by her sons and their wives, William Rich Terry (Linda) of Georgetown, Texas, and Rex Moreland Terry (Ginger) of Fort Smith; seven grandchild­ren; and ten great-grandchild­ren, including a baby girl due to be born in December.

Carolyn grew up in Tyronza. Her father and both grandfathe­rs were country doctors in northeast Arkansas. She and Dudley married on January 25, 1942, and lived in Tyronza, where Dudley was a farmer, mail carrier, and deacon in the Tyronza First Baptist Church. Carolyn was the church pianist and school nurse for Tyronza Public Schools. In 1988 she and Dudley moved to Fort Smith. They joined First Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and she remained active until her death. Full of wit and witticisms, always enjoying life in the moment, Carolyn was a loving and faithful wife, mother, friend, and a wonderful cook. Above all things, she enjoyed people.

Private interment will be at the Fort Smith National Cemetery under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.
