STUTTGART — Mary Alice Wallace Humphrey

died November 12, 2021, in Stuttgart, Ark. She was born April 1, 1928, in Magnolia, Ark., daughter of James Carl and Ona Price Wallace. Mrs. Humphrey attended Magnolia public schools, graduating from high school in 1946, and from A & M College (now Southern Arkansas University). She also attended the University of Oklahoma-Norman, where she worked in the journalism school library. She married James E. Humphrey of DeQueen, living there two years before moving to Stuttgart in 1951, and becoming associated with the Daily Leader Publishing Co. A former part-owner of the paper, she also was an employee from 1951-1953, and again 1968-1980. During the early years, she held the positions of bookkeeper, society editor and circulatio­n manager. Later she worked in the news department, was society editor, and retired as assistant managing editor. She was a member of First Baptist Church and, for many years, served as secretary of the second grade Sunday School department. She was a member of the FBC Long-Range Planning and Building Committee. She also enjoyed walking daily with her friend, Gene, gathering with their “coffee group”, fishing, and being with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Humphrey; one brother, James R. Wallace; one brother-in-law, McGinnis Clark; and a very special friend, Jesse “Gene” Townsend. Survivors are her son, James Carl (LoraNelle) Humphrey, Stuttgart; her daughter, Mary Ann (Jon) Troxel, Jonesboro; two grandsons: Bryan Carl (Hannah) Humphrey and Allan Christophe­r (Sydney) Humphrey; three great-grandchild­ren: Finn, Mae, and Everett; one brother, Billy C. Wallace, Newnan, Ga.; one sister, Bettie Clark, Houston, Texas; and one sister-in-law, Helen Wallace, Tucker, Ga. Visitation is 9:3010:30 a.m. Tuesday at Turpin Funeral Home. Graveside services, officiated by Rev. Grant Medford, will follow at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lone Tree Cemetery chapel.
