Betty Lee Spharler Hughes Floyd

On Friday, December 10, 2021, Betty Lee Spharler Hughes Floyd, loving mother, grandmothe­r, and sister, passed away at the age of ninety-three.

Betty was born December 2, 1928, in Warren, Ark., to Clarence Ross Spharler, Sr. and Helen Lee Woods Spharler. She was raised in Pine Bluff and graduated from Watson Chapel High School. She later attended Fuhr School of Business in Pine Bluff. Betty worked at Simmons First National Bank as a supervisor in the Transit Department for 20 years, and with her brother, Sonny, at Spharler’s Jewelry, the family business.

On July 27, 1946, Betty married Joseph Anthony Hughes, Sr. They had one son, Joseph Anthony Hughes, Jr. After Mr. Hughes’ passing, she later married Ray Floyd on November 26, 1993. They enjoyed many happy years together until his passing in 2001.

God graced Betty with many talents, and she excelled in each one. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, quilting, calligraph­y, China painting, refinishin­g furniture, and chair caining. Her love of cooking was enjoyed by family and friends, and they looked forward to each occasion when they could sample her carrot cake, party-mix, sweet potatoes, green beans, and ham, and salmon croquets. She had a passion for gardening and was known for her beautiful flowers which she shared with many.

Betty was a devoted member of Immanuel Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings, Sonny, Charles, Larry, Joyce, Mary Lou, and an infant sister, Shirley Marie; her first husband, Joseph Anthony Hughes, Sr.; and her second husband, Ray Floyd.

She is survived by a son, Joseph Anthony Hughes, Jr. of Pine Bluff; a grandson, Spencer Hughes and Karla of Bauxite; a granddaugh­ter, Angela Franks of New Orleans; two great-grandsons: Tyler and Jacob Hughes; and one great-great-granddaugh­ter, Cheyenne Hughes; two sisters: Patsy Baber and Jo Ann Bussey; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside funeral service by Ralph Robinson & Son will be Monday, December 13, 2021, 12 noon, at Fitzhugh Cemetery, with James Watson officiatin­g.
