Q: What Is the Prevalence of Prostate Cancer?

A: Prostate cancer is very common. In fact, it’s the second most common cancer that men are diagnosed with in the United States each year. About 1 man in 8 will develop prostate cancer at some point in life, but the good news is the survival rate is high. When it’s detected early, prostate cancer is highly treatable and can be cured in many cases. Sometimes, especially if it’s slow-growing, active surveillance may be recommended instead of moving forward with treatment right away.

Even though prostate cancer is extremely prevalent, most men who have prostate cancer won’t die from it. According to the

American Cancer Society, more than 3.1 million American men who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer are still living today. Even though 1 man in 8 will develop prostate cancer in his lifetime, only 1 man in 41 will actually end up dying from it. Often, men with prostate cancer will eventually die due to other natural causes. Most men who are diagnosed with the disease are over 50 years old and may already have other underlying health conditions. Leading a healthy lifestyle by eating nutritious foods, exercising and avoiding harmful substances is an important part of prostate cancer management.

If you’re diagnosed with prostate cancer, the best treatment option for you will depend on several factors. These include:

• Your age

• Your life expectancy

• What stage the cancer is

• Your overall health • Potential side effects of treatment

Your doctor will be able to explain your options and help you make an educated decision moving forward. Common treatment options include radiation therapy, hormone therapy, chemotherapy, intensity-modulated radiation therapy and surgery. Every case is different and it’s best to thoroughly discuss your health, needs and lifestyle with your physician before choosing a treatment plan.
