WYNNE — James “Jim” Charles Luker,

80, of Wynne, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 16. He was born Feb. 24, 1942 in Little Rock to Mr. Joe Compton Luker, Sr and Mrs. Zula Inez “Stanley” Luker.

After growing up in North Little Rock, Jim graduated from UofA Law School. He loved hunting, fishing, golf, and a friendly game of dominoes. In retirement he took pride in building birdhouses and sharing his backyard tomatoes. He served as an Elder at Wynne Presbyteri­an Church where he enjoyed teaching Sunday school.

Jim dedicated his life to public service, first as the mayor of Wynne, then as a State Representa­tive and Senator. In 16 years as a Democrat in the legislatur­e, he served on a range of committees, including chair of the Judiciary Committee, and worked to improve the Arkansas criminal justice system, crafting laws that addressed fair sentencing, recidivism, and correction­s costs.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years: Myra Jo “Burford” Luker; three sons, James “Jay” Luker, Jr. and wife Jennifer Zacharis of Lexington, Mass., Hunt Luker and wife Jennifer Huang of Guangzhou, China, Stanley Luker of Boston, Mass.; and four grandchild­ren, Nico, Cora, Karenna and Braam.
