100 YEARS AGO June 18, 1923

■ The W. H. Lusby drug store … was destroyed by fire of unknown origin late last night; a dry goods store operated by Mrs. Katie Hoppe … was badly damaged and the home of Mrs. Anna D. Durst … was damaged considerab­ly. The latter two places are annexes to the drug store. … The fire was discovered by pedestrian­s on their way home. Companies Nos. 2 and 4 responded, but when they arrived the flames had spread the entire length of the frame structure on the east side. Mrs. Hoppe said the fire was breaking through the front when she first saw it and that the alarm was sounded immediatel­y afterwards.

50 YEARS AGO June 18, 1973

■ Federal, state and local authoritie­s Sunday arrested Paul Alfred Green, 24, and his wife, Cheryl Lynn Green, 20, … and charged them with violating federal racketeeri­ng laws in connection with an extortion scheme. Ray Faisst, special agent in charge of the FBI at Little Rock, said FBI agents, Arkadelphi­a Police Chief Marvin Miller, Clark County Sheriff Billy Ralph Hasley and Sgt. Jack W. Ursery of the State Police arrested the Greens at their home in a rural area east of Arkadelphi­a. Faisst said authoritie­s said they found Carl Steven Coursey, 20, of Little Rock and Donald Lloyd Clark, 29, of Benton tied with adhesive tape to chairs in the front of the home. They confiscate­d an automatic .38-caliber pistol from Mrs. Green. Faisst said Assistant United States Attorney James Gutensohn of Fort Smith authorized the filing of the complaint charging the Greens with causing interstate facilities to be used for the purpose of violating extortion laws. The complaint alleges specifical­ly that on June 16, the Greens caused some telephone calls to be made from Arkadelphi­a to Birmingham, Ala., and a wire transfer to be sent from Birmingham, Ala., to Hot Springs, in furtheranc­e of the extortion scheme.

BENTONVILL­E — About 25 police officers searched for almost two hours Wednesday for a man they said fled a traffic accident in Bentonvill­e and left suspected drugs behind in his vehicle. At 3 p.m., and moments after police called off the search for Michael Shane Casteel, they arrested him about a mile north of the accident site at Southeast Walton Boulevard near Sixth Street, Bentonvill­e Police Chief James Allen said. Casteel, 29, of Rogers, left his vehicle and ran east into nearby woods after his vehicle hit another from behind about 12:45 p.m., Allen said. Police found needles, spoons and white powder in Casteel’s vehicle, Allen said. … About five minutes after police called off the search, an officer saw him behind Garden City Nursery.

■ Five men facing trial regarding the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon returned to a military courtroom in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, on Monday for the first time since February, sitting quietly as defense lawyers questioned a retired U.S. vice admiral. Accused mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammed … and the four others are accused of plotting the 9/11 attacks that used hijacked passenger airplanes to kill almost 3,000 people at the World Trade Center in Manhattan, at the Pentagon in Virginia, and in Pennsylvan­ia. … They are charged with conspiring to finance, train, and direct the 19 hijackers who seized the four planes, as well as terrorism, hijacking aircraft, conspiracy, murder in violation of the laws of war and attacking civilians.
