Razorbacks extend scholarship offer to Bauxite’s Wimberly

- — Richard Davenport

Bauxite’s Marcus Wimberly shined at the University of Arkansas’ oneday camp on Saturday and left Fayetteville with a scholarship offer from the Razorbacks.

Wimberly, 6-1 and 183 pounds, had offers from Memphis, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Sam Houston State and Tennessee-Martin coming into the camp. He is the sixth in-state prospect in the 2025 class to receive an offer from Arkansas.

He was able to do a tour of Arkansas’ facilities and afterward met with Razorbacks Coach Sam Pittman in his office.

“Pittman goes like, ‘Well, do you love the Hogs?’ And I said, ‘Yes sir.

It’s been a dream of mine since I was a little kid,’ ” Wimberly said. “He goes, ‘Well, when I was growing up, I loved the Hogs too and it was my dream school and wanted to play for the Hogs, but I wasn’t quite good enough. But I think you are, so you have a full ride scholarship to play for me at the University of Arkansas.’ ”

Wimberly said he was stunned and somewhat speechless after hearing he had an offer.

“I was getting a little emotional, trying to hold it back,” Wimberly said. “My dad started getting a little emotional so it got a little harder. I really didn’t know what to do with myself and we got out to the car and I hugged my dad and I lost it with tears of joy because God has blessed me and my family with the position we’re in.”

The class of 2025 prospect was timed at 4.52 seconds in the 40-yard dash, had a 38-inch vertical leap and measured 10-2 in the standing broad jump in testing. He then shined during 1-on-1s as a safety.

The thought of committing entered his mind.

“It’s definitely a thought for sure because it’s my home state and it’s been my dream school since I was a little kid,” Wimberly said. “So it’s definitely a very strong thought, but I’m going to talk with my family and we may wait just a minute and see where the Lord is going to lead me because after all, everything that’s happening now is great but in the end nothing matters unless I’m keeping the Lord’s plan for my life in the forefront.”

As a sophomore, Wimberly had 1,500 yards of total offense while playing receiver and quarterback. On defense, he had three interceptions, including two that were returned for touchdowns.

One of the interception returns was 95 yards.

He has a 305-pound bench press, 415-pound squat and 260-pound power clean.
