Our friend Jerry Scott has informed us Arkansas State will have a couple of firsts in history this football season.

Following the Sept. 2 season opener at Oklahoma, the Red Wolves return to Centennial Bank Stadium for the first three-game September homestand in program history as well as fan giveaways for all six home games.

On Sept. 9 with a 6:00 p.m. matchup against Memphis will be “Paint the Stadium Red Night,” topping off Jonesboro Regional Chamber of Commerce’s “Paint the Town Red Week.” Gates will open at 4:00 p.m., and the first 1,000 fans will receive a 2023 A-State Football schedule koozie compliments of St. Bernards.

On Saturday, Sept. 16, the Red Wolves host Stony Brook in a 6:00 p.m. contest and the first 1,000 fans will receive a special commemorative Coke bottle featuring the logo celebrating the 50th season being played inside what is now known as Centennial Bank Stadium.

The game against Stony Brook will also serve as “Teacher Appreciation Night,” with all area teachers being able to go to https:// fevo.me/astateteacher and buy discounted tickets. During the game, A-State will present six area teachers with $1,000 “Extra Yard for Teachers” grants. To apply for one of the grants log on to https://AStateRedWolves.com/Teachers.

That game will also celebrate 15 years of its Red Wolves nickname and mascot Howl who will be joined by high school mascots from around the area, and members of the “Howl’s Pals” kids’ club will be able to enjoy a piece of Howl’s birthday cake.

On Sept. 23, the Red Wolves host Southern Miss in the Sun Belt Conference opener. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m., and the first 1,000 fans will get a free cap featuring both Greenway Equipment and Red Wolves logos. It will be Band Day at Centennial Bank Stadium, with the “Sound of the Natural State” being joined by hundreds of high school band members from across the region.

That is also Family Weekend at A-State, with discount tickets for parents and family members at https://fevo.me/astatefamilyweekend.

Homecoming is Oct. 21, presented by Barton’s. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m., and the first 1,000 fans will receive a “50 Seasons Celebration” poster featuring both original and current photos of Centennial Bank Stadium.

A-State hosts Louisiana-Lafayette at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, for its annual Ag Day game celebrating the important role agriculture plays in the lives of all Arkansans. There will also be a theme ticket celebrating Centennial Bank. Season ticket holders will have an opportunity to purchase a voucher to receive one of the tickets.

The Nov. 18 season finale will be 2 p.m. against Texas State and will be both Fan Appreciation Day and Heroes Day. Senior Day activities will be presented by Hytrol and 1,000 fans will receive a collectible bobblehead featuring A-State great and current New Orleans Saints’ All-Pro linebacker Demario Davis. . . .

I can’t remember editorial space ever being turned over to an athletic director, but last Saturday the University of Arkansas’ director of athletics had a well-written, well-thought out and factual description of why Congress needs to be involved to bring some oversight and leadership to Name, Image and Likeness.

It has been reported the Texas Longhorns have three players of the top 12 valued at a total of $5,2 million.

A source says Arch Manning is not taking a penny of his estimated worth of $2.9 million, but one can only imagine what UT’s total athlete payroll is while Arkansas is trying to make do with $4 million for its entire football team.
