MOTOR SPORTS Race For Hope 71 slated for BMS
Many of the nation’s top dirt modified drivers are expected to be in attendance tonight, Friday night and Saturday night for the seventh annual Race For Hope 71 IMCA modified event at Batesville Motor Speedway in Locust Grove.
Racing cards for tonight and Friday night will include heat races, B-features and a preliminary feature. On Saturday, there will be three B-features and the 71-lap main event, which will page $10,000 to win and $1,000 to start.
Tonight and Friday, drivers will accumulate points in order to make the field for Saturday’s main event. The top 18 in points will transfer to the main event with the rest of the drivers going the B-Mains.
Adult grandstand admission is $20 each night, youth aged 13-15 get in for $5 and children aged 12 and under get in free. Pit passes are $35 each night. Grandstand gates open at 5 p.m. and racing starts at 7:30 p.m.
GOLF Lyon men win USCAA national title
The Lyon College men’s team won the United State Collegiate Athletic Association national title Tuesday after winning the championship tournament title over 18 other teams on Penn State’s Blue Course at State College, Pa.
The Scots shot a two-day total of 597, which was nine shots better than second-place Penn State-Hazleton. Ryan Kriz led Lyon with a two-day total of 4-over 148 after shooting a 4-over 76 in Tuesday’s final round. Kriz finished third individually with three birdies and 9 pars Tuesday.
Manav Perfecto was second for the Scots with a two-day total of 149 with a 1-over 73 Tuesday to place fourth overall. Jackson Baughman shot a 1-over 73 for a two-day total of 150 for sixth place. Other Scots were Tyler Doucet (152, seventh), Beau Perry (154, ninth) and Wes Lange (164, 47th). Red Wolves third in Oregon
Collecting his third top-three finish in four tournaments, Thomas Schmidt helped the Arkansas State men’s golf team to a third-place finish among 14 teams at the Oregon State Invitational on Tuesday at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis, Ore.
Schmidt closed out a third-place individual finish with an even-par 71, his ninth par or better round in 12 rounds played this season. He totaled 2-under 211 for the tournament, two strokes shy of Nicholas Prieto of Arizona State for individual medalist honors.
Jake Lile was 2-over 73 in the final round to total 11-over 224 (74-77-73) and a tie for 49th. Jack Maxey tied for 27th with a total of 8-over 221 (77-69-75), while Chris Somerfield (71-74-79) and Pierce Johnson (72-70-82) tied for 49th.
As a team, the Red Wolves totaled 14-over 298 on the final round to finish third behind Oregon State (+3) and Washington State (+9).
SOCCER Bears’ Van Burndy collects ASUN weekly award
After helping the University of Central Arkansas earn a spot in the ASUN women’s tournament, Kelly Van Gundy was named the ASUN Player of the Week on Tuesday.
Van Gundy was instrumental in helping the Bears go 2-0 last week, earning a shutout over Bellarmine on Thursday before defeating Eastern Kentucky on Sunday. The junior midfielder scored 2 goals and logged an assist over the 2 games, tallying 5 points in 2 matches.
ASU’s Luther earns Sun Belt honor
Arkansas State women’s goalkeeper Olivia Luther has been named Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Luther stymied Georgia State on Sunday for her seventh career shutout, third-most in program history. She registered nine saves as the Red Wolves held the second-most potent offense in the league off the scoreboard. On Thursday against Troy, Luther allowed one goal, but stopped two other shots. The win marked the 11th of her career, tied for the fourth-most in program history.
