Leo’s will leave its patrons royally full

- KIMBERLY DISHONGH

Leo’s Greek Castle at 2925 Kavanaugh Blvd. in Little Rock isn’t fancy, but when you leave you will almost certainly be royally full.

The dining area at Leo’s is more cottage than castle, with about 10 small tables crammed close together. And there is little in the way of formality — the wait staff (singular) was polite but would have looked sorely out of place in anything other than jeans and a T-shirt.

We got menus as soon as we walked through the door, chose our own table, and had our drinks in short order. My lunch companions ordered Leo’s signature gyros, one chicken ($8.99) and one lamb ($9.79), and they arrived warm, with pitas stuffed full of meat, tzatziki sauce, onions and tomatoes. One companion declared the gyro was “almost” as good as the $3.49 basket of fries we shared. The fries, I’m told, are seasoned with a blackened redfish mix as well as a proprietary blend of spices — and my companion is right about them being delicious.

I asked for a BLT ($8.49) and did not even have to specify that I wanted the bread toasted because, according to the Leo’s website, “buns of all kinds” should be toasted. The bacon was the perfect kind of crisp, the lettuce was green and firm — not the soggy, pale kind you might expect on quick

food — and the tomato was big and juicy. But honestly, I could have eaten the buttery toasted bread all by itself and been a happy camper.

We had to wait about 10 minutes for our food, which was not long, and we didn’t mind anyway. It gave us time to take in the walls, plastered with coloring sheets of Leo the Lion filled in by diners big and small, and with some funky art, and to watch some of the foot traffic on Kavanaugh Boulevard through the big front windows.

We will be back for some more Leo’s goodness. There is irony in a dive including palatial descriptive words in its name, but this is one castle that provides just the kind of fortification we need to go about the rest of our day.
