— On Saturday January 13, 2024, Major Calvin “Cal” Chun (retired U.S. Air

Force) age 92 died in Dublin, Ohio, after a brief illness but a long and fulfilled life. He was an inspiratio­n to many, always wore the biggest smile and spread joy, happiness, and positivity to all around him.

Cal proudly served 23 years in the Air Force where he earned numerous citations and awards including the Air Force Commendati­on medal, Unit Citation medal, Outstandin­g Unit medal, National Defense Service Medal with bronze star, and Small Arms Expert ribbon. He later worked for 14 years with the North Little Rock (Arkansas) Public School District as a teacher and junior high assistant principal. One of his proudest career achievemen­ts was making a positive difference in the lives of his students.

He was an active member of St. Patrick Church and later at Immaculate Conception Church both in North Little Rock. He was a member and leader in his church and community with far too many roles to count but among them positions (many held more than once) of President of St. Patrick Parish Council, PTA, and Men’s Club, Eucharisti­c Minister, adult choir member, President of the North Little Rock Retired Teachers Associatio­n, President of Little Rock Mt. St. Mary Academy PTA, Catholic Diocese of Little Rock School Board, an active member of Knights of Columbus as 4th Degree Knight, Past Faithful Navigator of the Little Rock/North Little Rock Assembly, as well as Grand Knight of North Little Rock Council. He was a member of the Arkansas Barbershop Quartet Singers, and volunteere­d as a youth baseball and basketball coach.

His favorite pastimes were playing golf with buddies at the Emerald Park Golf Associatio­n in North Little Rock, traveling all corners of the world with his wife, and visiting his grandchild­ren supporting their every activity, playing endless rounds of games, and sharing his zest for life.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 3, 2024, at 2 p.m. at Schoedinge­r Dublin, 5980 Perimeter Drive, Dublin, Ohio 43017. A funeral mass will be held Friday, April 26, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in North Little Rock, Ark. followed by inurnment at the Arkansas Veterans Cemetery at 12 p.m.

Cal is survived by his daughter, Suzy Spaeth of Woodridge, Illinois, and son, Bill Chun (Cassie) of Powell, Ohio; eight grandchild­ren whom he loved dearly: Nick (Victoria) Spaeth of Barrington, Illinois; Taylor (Liz) Spaeth of Chicago, Illinois; Justin (Angela) Spaeth of Oswego, Illinois; Christi Spaeth of Austin, Texas; Katherine Spaeth of Woodridge, Illinois; Ryan Spaeth of Elmhurst, Illinois; Kelsey Chun Cellar (Adam) of Columbus, Ohio; and Will Chun of Ridgewood, N.Y.; and six great-grandchild­ren whom he was so excited to get to know: William and Christian Spaeth; Ronan Spaeth; Lily and Ella Spaeth; and Riley Cellar.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years Lu (Finney) Chun, parents William and Florence Chun, and older brother Ernest Chun.

Honorary pallbearer­s are his grandsons and Roger Kordsmeier. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a favorite charity.
