Man gets 8-year sentence in stolen mail, gun case
A Pulaski County man who pleaded guilty last September to possession of stolen mail and possession of a firearm by a felon was sentenced to serve nearly eight years in federal prison last week.
On Thursday, U.S. District Judge James M. Moody Jr. sentenced James Diant Miller, 28, of North Little Rock, to 60 months’ incarceration for possession of stolen mail and 95 months — one month short of eight years — on the firearm possession count, with the sentences to be served concurrently, for a total of 95 months. Moody also ordered Miller to serve three years’ supervised release when he leaves prison. Miller was also ordered to pay $1,650 in restitution and a $200 special penalty assessment.
On July 18, 2022, law enforcement officials conducted surveillance of the blue collection box located in front of the Westside Post Office at 11415 Huron Lane in Little Rock. In the early morning hours, two individuals, later identified as Kobe Powell and Miller, arrived at the Westside Post Office in a black Ford Crown Victoria. After seeing Powell open the postal collection box, officers attempted to make contact, but Powell and Miller fled in the vehicle at a high rate of speed and eventually crashed into a residence. After the crash, Powell and Miller fled from the vehicle and were arrested by law enforcement. After Miller was arrested, a Glock firearm was found in his possession.
Powell, who pleaded guilty last April to possession of stolen mail and possession of a counterfeit check, was sentenced last September to 20 months in prison.
A two-count superseding information was filed on Sept. 21, 2023, charging Miller with possession of stolen mail and being a felon in possession of a firearm. On the same day, Miller pleaded guilty to the charges.
The case was investigated by the United States Postal Inspection Service, United States Secret Service, Little Rock Police Department, and Arkansas State Police. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jana Harris prosecuted the case. Miller was represented in court by Christian Chance Alexander of Jacksonville.
