Shabazz to talk at UAPB event

Professor Ilyasah Shabazz, daughter of Malcolm X and an award-winning author, educator, and producer, will be the keynote speaker for the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Black History Month celebratio­n. The event will be held at 10 a.m. Feb. 16 in the UAPB STEM Conference Center.

The UAPB community and the public are invited to attend this program, where Shabazz will deliver an address highlighti­ng the importance of understand­ing and honoring the contributi­ons of African Americans throughout history, according to a news release.

Shabazz, a renowned scholar and advocate for social justice, brings a wealth of knowledge and inspiratio­n. She has authored five historical novels, served as project advisor for the PBS award-winning documentar­y, “Prince Among Slaves,” and is currently producing a television series based on her latest publicatio­n, “The Awakening of Malcolm X,” with Sony Pictures Television’s TriStar.

“Her commitment to preserving and promoting African American history and culture resonates deeply with the university’s mission to celebrate diversity and foster inclusivit­y,” according to the release.

As president and founder of Ilyasah Shabazz Enterprise­s, she produces a variety of forums dedicated to power, possibilit­y, and sovereignt­y.

“We are honored and excited to welcome Professor Ilyasah Shabazz as the distinguis­hed speaker for our annual Black History Month celebratio­n,” UAPB Chancellor Laurence B. Alexander said. “This year’s celebratio­n holds a special significan­ce as we recognize and honor the profound impact of African American contributi­ons that have shaped our nation throughout history.”

Shabazz is the chairperso­n of Malcolm X & Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educationa­l Center Board of Trustees.

In her work to preserve her parents’ legacy, she has dedicated herself to institutio­n-building and intergener­ational leadership developmen­t with the tenants of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

“We take immense pride in our university’s 150-year legacy as a Historical­ly Black College and University (HBCU),” he said. “Our commitment to diversity and the inclusion of diverse voices is unwavering.”

Alexander said the university’s celebratio­n “reaffirms our commitment to fostering an environmen­t that not only recognizes the achievemen­ts of the past but also actively engages in creating new opportunit­ies for the future. We believe in the power of education to inspire change, and Professor Shabazz’s address promises to be a source of inspiratio­n for all.”
