Shabazz to talk at UAPB event
Professor Ilyasah Shabazz, daughter of Malcolm X and an award-winning author, educator, and producer, will be the keynote speaker for the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Black History Month celebration. The event will be held at 10 a.m. Feb. 16 in the UAPB STEM Conference Center.
The UAPB community and the public are invited to attend this program, where Shabazz will deliver an address highlighting the importance of understanding and honoring the contributions of African Americans throughout history, according to a news release.
Shabazz, a renowned scholar and advocate for social justice, brings a wealth of knowledge and inspiration. She has authored five historical novels, served as project advisor for the PBS award-winning documentary, “Prince Among Slaves,” and is currently producing a television series based on her latest publication, “The Awakening of Malcolm X,” with Sony Pictures Television’s TriStar.
“Her commitment to preserving and promoting African American history and culture resonates deeply with the university’s mission to celebrate diversity and foster inclusivity,” according to the release.
As president and founder of Ilyasah Shabazz Enterprises, she produces a variety of forums dedicated to power, possibility, and sovereignty.
“We are honored and excited to welcome Professor Ilyasah Shabazz as the distinguished speaker for our annual Black History Month celebration,” UAPB Chancellor Laurence B. Alexander said. “This year’s celebration holds a special significance as we recognize and honor the profound impact of African American contributions that have shaped our nation throughout history.”
Shabazz is the chairperson of Malcolm X & Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center Board of Trustees.
In her work to preserve her parents’ legacy, she has dedicated herself to institution-building and intergenerational leadership development with the tenants of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
“We take immense pride in our university’s 150-year legacy as a Historically Black College and University (HBCU),” he said. “Our commitment to diversity and the inclusion of diverse voices is unwavering.”
Alexander said the university’s celebration “reaffirms our commitment to fostering an environment that not only recognizes the achievements of the past but also actively engages in creating new opportunities for the future. We believe in the power of education to inspire change, and Professor Shabazz’s address promises to be a source of inspiration for all.”
