SEARK’s hitters pound SAU Tech

Four Southeast Arkansas College baseball players hammered 2 hits apiece, and Drake Lee and Darron Degeyter each drove in 3 runs Friday in a 15-4 win over Southern Arkansas University Tech to close a doubleheader.

The Sharks (3-7) have won three in a row and set a program record for runs in a game. SEARK scored 7 of its runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by a 2-run Lee home run.

Angel Castilleja also smashed a solo homer in the sixth for the Sharks.

Cameron Gonzalez hit a triple and double in the win. Degeyter and Ortiz each doubled.

Five SEARK pitchers were used, with Gary Baker earning the win with 2 nohit innings and 2 strikeouts.

Cale Edmonds was SAU Tech’s only multiple hitter, going 2 for 3.

The Sharks, who won Friday’s first game 7-2, had 12 hits to the Rockets’ 7 in the second game. The Sharks will play at South Arkansas Community College in El Dorado at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

SOFTBALL Sharks lose 2 straight in Ala.

In Dothan, Ala., the SEARK softball team fell into a slump after winning its first game of a tournament it co-hosts with Chipola College of Florida.

After the 9-4 win over Alabama’s Lurleen B. Wallace on Friday, SEARK lost 6-3 to Central Alabama later that day and dropped a 14-0, 5-inning decision to Mississippi’s Pearl River on Saturday.

SEARK (3-6) tried to stage a late comeback, scoring 2 in the sixth to pull within 4-3, but Central Alabama scored 2 on a double with 2 out in the bottom of the inning.

Kyla Ashford, Chiara Olison and Jade Hendrix each had 2 hits in the loss. Haley Cummings also tripled.

Pearl River limited SEARK to 3 hits, but 3 errors also came back to haunt the Sharks. The Wildcats scored 7 runs in the first inning, 4 in the third and 3 in the fourth.

Laykin Hartsfield and Ashford each doubled for SEARK, which will close its stay in Dothan with games against Florida’s Hillsborough CC at 9 a.m. and Alabama’s Southern Union State at 11 a.m.
