SWAC WOMEN

JACKSON STATE 72, UAPB 56

Jackson State used a big first-quarter run to get out of an early jam and seize control of a key Southweste­rn Athletic Conference game at H.O. Clemmons Arena in Pine Bluff.

Andriana Avent finished with 20 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals for the Tigers, who were behind 7-0 but went on a 19-2 run to give themselves a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Ti’lan Boler had 18 points, while both Miya Crump and Laila Walker ended with eight points in the win.

The victory was the 11th in a row for Jackson State (166, 11-0), which opened up a three-game lead in the SWAC standings over the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The Golden Lions, who played without leading scorer Zaay Green, got 14 points from Coriah Back and 11 points and nine rebounds from Maya Peat. Jelissa Reese and Azaria Robinson contribute­d 10 points apiece, with Robinson also adding 12 rebounds.

UAPB (13-11, 8-3) trailed 3726 at halftime and was down by as much as 18 points in the second half. The Golden Lions pulled within 57-47 with 7:28 to go, but the Tigers went on a 10-2 run over the next four minutes to virtually put the game away.

JACKSON STATE 76, UAPB 63

Four players scored in double figures for Jackson State (10-14, 6-5 Southweste­rn Athletic Conference), led by 17 points apiece from Jordan O’Neal and Keionte Cornelius, as it rolled to victory at H.O. Clemmons Arena in Pine Bluff.

O’Neal and Cornelius combined to hit 14 of 25 shots for the Tigers, who led 54-50 with less than 10 minutes to go in the game. But Cornelius nailed a three-pointer with 9:06 to go that started a quick 7-0 run to give Jackson State a double-digit lead.

The University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff (10-15, 5-6) managed to cut its deficit to 66-61 by the 3:14 mark following a pair of free throws from Kylen Milton, but the Golden Lions scored just two points the rest of the way.

Keiveon Hunt finished with 14 points and Ken Evans Jr. netted 13 points for the Tigers, who committed only five turnovers compared to 15 for UAPB.

Robert Lewis led the Golden Lions with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
