AUBURN 2, ARKANSAS 1

-

Auburn scored two runs in the first inning against the No. 20 Arkansas softball team, and it proved to be enough to avoid a series sweep.

Auburn’s victory Sunday snapped a 10game winning streak in the series for Arkansas. It was the Tigers’ first victory over the Razorbacks since 2018.

For the second Sunday in a row, Auburn (14-6-1, 2-4 SEC) avoided a sweep behind the arm of reigning SEC pitcher of the year Maddie Penta, who became the program’s all-time wins leader.

Penta, who lost to Arkansas (22-6, 2-1) in Game 1 of a doubleheader Saturday, bounced back with her eighth victory. She threw a complete game with 1 run allowed on 6 hits and struck out 4.

Auburn shortstop Nelia Peralta hit a twoout, two-run single to give Auburn a 2-0 lead in the opening inning.

It came after Arkansas’ left-handed starter Robyn Herron exited the game with an apparent injury to her throwing shoulder. Herron (7-6) recorded 2 outs with 1 hit and 1 walk allowed.

Hannah Camenzind took over in the circle with two outs and runners on second and third. She loaded the bases with a walk and Peralta’s base hit gave the Tigers the lead.

Camenzind threw 1 2/3 innings and allowed 2 hits, walked 1 and forced 4 groundouts. Morgan Leinstock pitched the final 3 2/3 innings and held the Tigers scoreless with 2 hits against 13 batters faced.

The Razorbacks out-hit the Tigers 6-5. Arkansas stranded five runners.

The loss snapped the Razorbacks’ fivegame winning streak.

Arkansas is scheduled to play at Texas A&M-Commerce at 2 p.m today. The game will stream on ESPN-Plus.
