Lady Mounties bounce back

- PAUL BOYD

ROGERS — Two Rogers pitchers limited Gentry to one hit, then the Lady Mounties took advantage of two Lady Pioneers miscues in a 5-1 win to close Saturday’s high school softball action in the Bruce Dean Invitational at the Railyard.

Rogers (20-2) grabbed a 2-1 lead thanks to Lauryn Heinle’s two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the third. The Lady Mounties added three more runs in the sixth aided by a couple of Gentry throwing errors.

Heinle doubled and drove in a run for the Lady Mounties, while Raylee Wagner singled, drove in a run and scored twice. Rogers Coach Tori Stafford said she was pleased with how her team bounced back from a 2-0 loss to Pea Ridge on Friday night.

“I’m really proud of them,” Stafford said. “We had a tough loss last night, came back today and bounced back and did a really good job playing together as a team.”

Kadence Janney picked up the win for Rogers, allowing 1 run on 1 hit in 4 1/3 innings with 10 strikeouts and 3 walks. Daylyn Osborne got the final five outs, striking out four.

Stafford got the chance to see several different players in the lineup this weekend. She said all of them were up to the challenge.

“I thought [the weekend] was really good,” Stafford said. “A lot of people got a lot of opportunities. No matter what name was called, they were ready to go and ready to have a good at-bat or run or play defense. It’s a long weekend and we stayed with it. We stayed the course and really fought, and this was our sixth game today of the week.”

The Lady Pioneers (15-4) threatened in the top of the fifth as Callie Jordan drew a one-out walk. Pinch-runner Presley Ward stole second and moved to third on an error. But Olivia Nations struck out to end the threat.

Gentry Coach Shawn Teters said his team saw good competition throughout the weekend.

“Every team we played was from a higher classification,” said Teters, whose team also lost earlier in the day to Houston Christian. “I thought, to be honest with you, the pitching we saw this week prepares us for the postseason. I thought we did a good job overall. We kind of struggled a little bit offensively today. Our pitchers really battled, I thought.”

Gentry took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third as Iris Still drew a lead-off walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a double by Nations. Nations’ ball ticked off the glove of a diving Mak Fithian in center field.

HARRISON 11, SILOAM SPRINGS 0 (5)

Shelly Eddington tossed five scoreless innings and Jordin Quandt had three hits to lead the Lady Goblins to a five-inning, run-rule win. Quandt tripled twice, drove in two runs and scored twice for Harrison (7-13). Ryleigh Keele also added two hits and drove in three runs. Eddington allowed only two hits in the circle, struck out two and walked just one for Harrison. Lola Kirby accounted for both of Siloam Springs’ hits with a double and a single.

FAYETTEVILLE 3, SILOAM SPRINGS 2

Fayetteville snapped a 2-2 tie with a run in the bottom of the fifth on Ella Pacheco’s RBI triple into the right-field corner. Fayetteville’s Kendall Watts also hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 2-2. The Lady Panthers broke on top 1-0 in the top of the third on a Lady Bulldogs’ error and added another in the fourth to lead 2-0.

“I thought, to be honest with you, the pitching we saw this week prepares us for the postseason.”
