- Kara VanDooijeweert NorthJersey.com USA TODAY NETWORK – NEW JERSEY

Twitter, Instagram, Facebook — if you’ve been on social media in the past two weeks, you’ve probably heard about Grimace and his birthday. If you’re younger than 52, however, there’s a chance those posts have you confused. And if you’re younger than 27? You might be downright lost.

So, Gen Z, this one’s for you. Here’s everything you need to know about the trending icon.

Who is Grimace?

Grimace is a fictional character launched by McDonald’s in 1971 as part of their marketing efforts and commercial campaigns. Originally introduced as “Evil Grimace,” he was initially a villainous character who stole milkshakes from customers. That persona quickly shifted, though, and he is now known as the fuzzy, lovable, purple best friend of Ronald McDonald.

Why is Grimace trending today?

June 12th was Grimace’s birthday, so, in honor of the character’s 52 trips around the sun, McDonald’s announced a special “Grimace Birthday Meal.” Complete with a Big Mac (or nuggets), fries and a medium “Grimace Birthday Shake,” the limited-edition combo has become a hot topic on social media. The buzz primarily revolves around the never-before-seen purple shake.

Grimace has also “taken over” the company’s social media.

What does the Grimace Shake taste like?

As vibrantly colored as Grimace himself, the ‘Grimace Shake’ is described as being berry flavored. I’d categorize it as vanilla based with a hint of berry, though, rather than strictly berry itself. Some Reddit users nailed it when they said the shake tasted like fruity cereal milk.

Is the Grimace Shake good?

Lol, duh.

Can you buy the Grimace Shake without the Grimace Meal?

Technically, no — the meal has to be purchased together. Some locations, however, may accommodate the request. It kinda just depends how cool the employee is (and if the ice cream machine is working, of course).

What is the Grimace shake end date?

Grimace’s special meal is available now, and will stay on the market “while supplies last,” McDonald’s said.
