EATONTOWN Peter C. Rutan, 78, of Eatontown, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 14, 2023.

Born in Plainfield, NJ to Eugene and Elsie Rutan, Peter was raised in Dunellen and graduated from Dunellen High School as Class President. Peter went on to pursue his undergradu­ate studies at Brown University, then earned his Master’s from Rutgers University, followed by his doctorate (EdD), also from Rutgers. Peter was a skilled neuropsych­ologist and maintained his own practice on Maple Avenue in Red Bank for many years. He was a member of The National Academy of Neuropsych­ologists and the Reitan Society where he was a member of the “Knights of the Round Table”.

Peter was a sailing enthusiast and spent many days sailing on the Navesink River and the Chesapeake Bay. Peter, at a young age, attained his love for the outdoors when he spent years becoming an Eagle Scout. He enjoyed hiking, mountain climbing and bird watching. He appreciate­d fine wine and gourmet meals along with good conversati­on and stories.

Peter is predecease­d by his parents and by his daughter, Cynthia Calabrese.

Peter is survived by his beloved wife of 36 years, Barbara Meyer Rutan, his loving children, Scott Calabrese and wife Kimberli and Rachel Williams and husband Russell, his 5 cherished grandchild­ren, Anthony Calabrese and wife Eleanor, Briana Calabrese, Kansis Calabrese, Nicole Williams and Michael Beers, and his devoted sister, Kathryn Manka and husband Greg, as well as many nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Gathering will be held on Thursday, December 21st, from 3:00pm to 5:30pm at the John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Avenue, Red Bank. A Memorial Service will commence at the funeral home at 5:30pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Peter’s memory to: Mental Health Associatio­n of Monmouth County, or Brown Alumni Magazine.
