- Kathleen Hopkins

MANCHESTER – A 72-year-old township resident was flown by helicopter to a hospital Friday after the sport-utility vehicle he was driving struck a traffic sign, utility pole support wire, sign board and tree on Pinewald Kesnick Road, police said.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing, but police believe an unknown medical event may have been the primary contributing factor, according to a news release issued by Capt. Vincent Manco.

Police responded to the area of Pinewald Keswick Road and Crestwood Parkway about 6:23 p.m. to investigate a crash involving a single vehicle and utility pole, the news release said.

Officers there found a 2010 Cadillac Escalade off the roadway with extensive front-end damage and damage to the traffic sign, sign board, utility pole support wire and tree, the news release said. An ensuing investigation revealed that Pasquale Foggio, 72, of Manchester, was driving east on Pinewald Keswick Road when his vehicle left the roadway, struck the traffic sign and utility support wire before continuing east and striking the sign board and coming to rest after hitting a tree in the northbound shoulder, the release said.

Foggio was flown by a Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital life-flight medevac helicopter to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, where he was listed in stable condition, the news release said.

The road was partially closed during the investigation and cleanup.

Assisting at the scene were township emergency medical technicians, members of the Whiting Volunteer Fire Department and the Joint Base Fire Department, paramedics from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and a towing company.

Patrolman Brendan Brush of the police department’s traffic safety unit is continuing the investigation.
