INJURY CONCERNS
LAMAR JACKSON, BALTIMORE RAVENS
Jackson has missed five games in each of the past two seasons, with a sprained ankle in 2021 and a sprained knee in 2022. Given his reliance on mobility, recurring leg injuries are a major concern.
TUA TAGOVAILOA, MIAMI DOLPHINS
The Dolphins picked up Tagovailoa’s fifth-year option during the offseason, reinforcing their commitment to him despite the concussion concerns that were magnified in 2022. He missed four games under the concussion protocol.
DANIEL JONES, NEW YORK GIANTS
Jones helped the Giants reach the playoffs and was rewarded in the offseason with a lucrative new fouryear, $160 million contract. Of course, any quarterback who runs that much is an injury concern.
MATTHEW STAFFORD, LOS ANGELES RAMS
Stafford was a major injury concern for all of 2022. Elbow issues limited his offseason work, but it was a combination of other injuries (concussions, neck) that ended his season after just nine games. Rams head coach Sean McVay said Stafford was cleared to play in April, but the issues are worth monitoring.
RYAN TANNEHILL, TENNESSEE TITANS
Tannehill began showing signs of wear in ’22. He missed Weeks 8 and 9 with an ankle injury and then missed the final three games after re-aggravating the injury. Tannehill turns 35 in July, and the Titans are already thinking about their QB of the future.
KYLER MURRAY, ARIZONA CARDINALS
Murray tore the ACL in his right knee in Week 14 last season and underwent surgery in early January. There have been reports that Murray does not want to rush things.
MAC JONES, NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS
Jones has been relatively durable, but his lack of production has created a tenuous situation. Jones can’t afford to miss time with injuries; there are already calls for Bailey Zappe to get a chance to start.
JIMMY GAROPPOLO, LAS VEGAS RAIDERS
Garoppolo’s up-and-down career with the 49ers unofficially ended in Week 13 last season when he broke his left foot. Garoppolo had entered ’22 following shoulder surgery, but his performance indicated that that injury was behind him.
BROCK PURDY, SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS
Purdy tore his UCL in the NFC Championship Game and had surgery in March. It’s no guarantee that he’ll be ready to start the season, and he’ll have a tough time getting back on the field if he’s not 100 percent.
TREY LANCE, SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS
The season-ending injuries that Lance suffered in Week 2 — a fractured fibula and ligament damage in his ankle — opened the door for two other 49ers QBs. Brock Purdy will compete with Lance for the starting job when he recovers from his own injury.
