Make a Recycled Bottle Garden

Continue the modernist tradition of elevating everyday materials with this earth- friendly garden idea.

- By JICKIE TORRES

YOU’VE DITCHED THE PLASTIC STRAWS, and you’re the ruler of reusable grocery bags. How else can you make an earth- friendly change? How about forgoing the brand new plant pot and salvaging something from the recycle bin instead?

Not only do we love the idea of taking a single- use item and giving it a longer- lasting shelf life, but this upcycled wall- planter idea also has a cool, mod pop art quality to it. Ready to do it yourself? Here’s how.

What you’ll need:

• 2- liter bottles, as many as needed for your garden • Ruler

• Sharp blade such as a knife or box cutter

• Paper

• Marker

• Drill

• Drainage medium such as perlite, gravel or small pebbles

• Soil

• Plants

• Pea gravel ( optional)

• Wall- mounted bottle holder of your choice

How to do it:

1. Clean and dry the bottles, and remove the labels.

2. With the paper make a template that you’ll use to cut a uniform hole in all the bottles. Experiment with size and placement, but a long narrow oval shape works best. Use the template and the marker to trace the shape onto the top of your bottle; then carefully cut it away with the blade.

3. Drill a hole into the bottle cap for extra drainage.

4. Add a layer of about an inch of your drainage medium in the bottom, followed by an inch or two of soil.

5. Add your plant and top with the pea gravel ( if using it).

6. Mount your wall hooks to your wall in the desired pattern to hang your bottle garden.
