Out in the Elements

Composing a stylish garden oasis is all about a multilayered look.

LUSH, TRANQUIL, INVITING… These are key vibes we all want for our outdoor spaces. But what does it take to create that feel? Page and DJ Sigband’s Eichler backyard in Orange, California, gives us a good recipe. Here are the elements that make it work.

Garden Variety

Between the swaying fronds, the intricate succulents and the sculptural palms, the Sigbands chose plants that fill in the space in all the right ways. When it comes to planning the plants that will make up your garden, think about everything from color, texture and variegation to vertical space.

Layered Spaces

The wood deck not only designates the special area right outside Page and DJ’s main bedroom, but it adds depth and dimension to the garden just by being a few inches off the ground. The gravel garden beds and decomposed granite paths both frame the area and add visual interest.

Textural Tapestry

This is where the cozy and intimate feel comes through. The white molded chairs add crisp contrast and pop against the surrounding area. The rich rusted patina of the geometric planters adds depth. All these materials work together to create a dynamic and thoughtfully designed space.
