CREATING A DYNAMIC RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE INDOORS AND OUTDOORS REQUIRES MORE THAN JUST STUNNING VIEWS. MATERIALS AND TEXTURE ALSO PLAY A MAJOR ROLE IN CREATING SPACES THAT EFFECTIVELY BLUR THE LINES.

1. Carrying Over Materials. At various places you’ll find similar materials used in both the interior and exterior. The wood trellis and screening wall outside is made of oiled Ipe, while the interior floors are Ipe as well. Look for opportunities to, as Craig says, “make the materiality from the outside come into the house.”

2. Adding Texture and Depth. Craig and his team used stonework throughout various rooms in the house. The raw materials like wood and stone throughout the home create a natural connection to the outdoors.

3. Well- Placed Windows. It’s not always just about the sheer number of windows and glass walls. Placement can be just as important. An enlarged bay window in the master bathroom is perfectly located to connect the space to a bamboo garden outside.
