Frey Inspiration
LANDSCAPE DESIGNER GABRIELA YARIV TOOK CUES FROM ALBERT FREY’S LOEWY HOUSE WHEN OVERHAULING THE BACKYARD AREA.
• Both a free- form shape to the pool and its close proximity to the house are reminiscent of Frey’s design. “It feels as if, from the interior, you’re looking straight out to the pool,” says Gabriela.
• Washingtonia palms were used for the Loewy house, and Gabriela used them here as well, craning them into the new plant pockets. “[ Frey’s] palette is different in terms of the other plants, but similarly you have quite a bit of gravel, granite boulders and … his areas of gravel are the main ground cover plane,” she notes.
• Boulders were inset into the bond- beam foundation, making them structurally integral, echoing the Loewy house pool.
• The pool coping used is similar, but not identical to the Loewy house, incorporating the “very iconic kind of washed- out tan concrete color, the thickness of the coping and the eased edge detail of the coping.”
