South Garland’s Maxey’s 46 points tie tourney record,
The 2018 boys state tournament concluded Saturday night at the Alamodome in San Antonio. Here’s a brief review of the final-day action:
The top individual performances on the closing day of the tournament along with the late games Friday night:
Santana Martinez, Lipan: Martinez, a senior guard, scored 14 points — including four in a closing 6-0 run — as the Apaches defeated Nazareth 49-42 in the Class A final. He also had three assists and four steals.
Tyrese Maxey, South Garland: Maxey, a junior guard, piled up 46 points in his team’s state semifinal loss to Katy Tompkins. His total tied a state tournament record as he made 14 of 25 field-goal attempts and sank 14 of 16 shots from the foul line.
Daniel Mosley, Bowie: Mosley, a 6-foot-5 junior, recorded his second double-double in as many games, scoring 17 of his team’s 32 points and pulling down 10 rebounds as Bowie won the Class 3A championship.
C.J. Washington and Jamal Bieniemy, Katy Tompkins: The 6-3 Washington and the 6-5 Bieniemy combined to score 51 points and grab 14 rebounds against South Garland.

HOME TEAM HIGHLIGHT
Looking back at a memorable victory for an Austin-area boys team at the state tournament:
Led by Brandon Irwin’s 19 points, including nine in the fourth quarter, Thorndale repeated as the Class A, Division I state champion with a 53-42 victory over Dallardsville Big Sandy on March 8, 2008.
Cody Schneider added 18 points and five rebounds for Thorndale, which remains the last Austin-area school to win a UIL championship in boys basketball.
