This ir­rev­er­ent cel­e­bra­tion of books, writ­ers, read­ers and the free­dom to read what­ever we please co­in­cides with Na­tional Banned Books Week, which launched in 1982 in re­sponse to a sud­den surge in the num­ber of chal­lenges to books in schools, stores and li­braries. The bash fea­tures eight read­ings from chal­lenged or banned books in­clud­ing “The Awak­en­ing,” “The Hunger Games,” “The Hate U Give” and more. The lat­ter re­cently pre­miered as a movie at the Toronto In­ter­na­tional Film Fes­ti­val.
