run the ball well and should be able to run it against anybody,” head coach Mack Brown said.

And the players seem to understand that there are things still to learn, work to be done. Brown and Bergeron said that after the game, as did right guard Mason Walters.

“Teams are going to know it is coming and prepare for it,” Walters said. “We’ll have to be better at being able to adjust on the run. (Saturday) was a good glimpse.”

That view did not include much of Gray, a first-year freshman who carried five times for nine yards. Mack Brown hopes to make more use of Gray against New Mexico (1-0) on Saturday. Gray’s teammates, having walked in his cleats last season as freshmen, offer advice.

“Have patience,” Malcolm Brown said. “Learn the system. I’m still learning.”

The Longhorns, as a group, ran the ball well most of the night against Wyoming. But Bergeron understands from experience how a defense can wear down late. He gained 75 of his 136 yards against Kansas last season in the fourth quarter. Bergeron had 39 yards on 13 carries through three quarters against Wyoming on Saturday, but busted loose for runs of 54 and 17 yards on one fourthquarter drive.

That’s what can happen when the Longhorns use

Gotta start building some momentum, with a four-game gauntlet of back-to-back road trips at Ole Miss and Oklahoma State, followed by highly ranked West Virginia and then Oklahoma. Offensive and defensive issues that popped up against Wyoming should be corrected. Right?

Last week, American-Statesman writer Kevin Lyttle provided an advance look at the Lobos, who were 1-11 last year before Saturday’s win over Southern, and haven’t won a conference title in 48 years. They were 120th in scoring offense and 119th in scoring defense in 2011. The new coach is former Notre Dame coach Bob Davie, and the new offensive coordinator is former Texas State head coach Bob DeBesse.

Texas 47, New Mexico 0 — Coming after a season-opening loss at BYU, this shutout victory was just what Texas needed. Eric Metcalf rushed for 139 yards and two touchdowns and also had five catches for 86 yards and another touchdown, while Chris Samuels added 74 yards and three scores. The Longhorns went on to win three games in a row before their season went south after losing to Oklahoma. a wave of gifted tailbacks, Bergeron said.

“It’s like hitting a wall,” he said. “After a while, that wall will just crumble, and you’ll get to go through.” Total offense Pts scored Yds allowed Pts allowed Passing TDs/INTs Rushing
