Win included good, bad

Ash was efficient and never seemed to get rattled

Texas is 1-0 with a 20point win under its belt. All in all, Saturday’s win had some good and bad, which is fine with Mack Brown.

“If we’d probably won 45-9, we’d have walked out of here feeling too good about ourselves,” Brown said after the game. “Now we’ve got things we can still work on.”

Thoughts from Saturday night:

It was a workmanlike effort for David Ash. He had his most efficient night throwing the ball — 20 of 27 — since last year’s win over Kansas. He took what the defense gave him for the most part, with notable check-down throws to Mike Davis The AmericanStatesman’s Internet partner for Longhorns sports has unmatched insight and analysis of recruiting and daily coverage of Longhorns teams. He also allowed Bryant Jackson to get open on an intermediate route for a big 15yard completion that set up a field goal right before the half.

Ash never seemed to get rattled, avoided the big mistake and showed marked improvement in his decision-making with his ability to throw a ball out of bounds or use his feet to keep a play alive and live to fight another down.

He showed the confidence that everyone kept telling us about in camp.

We saw it at times last year, and we saw it on Saturday. Late in the game, the Texas rushing attack put the game away.

It’s something that a lot of people have been waiting a long time to see.

Both Joe Bergeron and Malcolm Brown went over the century mark, but more important was the fact that Texas had scoring drives of 77 and 91 yards in the second half, with Brown and Bergeron pounding away on the Wyoming defense.

Great players make great plays that lift their team to a win. Kenny Vaccaro did that, and looked like an All-American in the process.

While Nick Jordan struggled — he missed two field goals and had an extra point blocked — Alex King averaged 53.3 yards a punt. But the part of the kicking game Mack Brown was most excited about was kick coverage.
