New book takes look at Royal couple
six weeks. Kind of like you breaking a window at home on a Monday and getting spanked by your dad more than a month later. Yeah, that makes sense.
3. The best Longhorn on the field in Texas’ opener was safety Kenny “Vacuum” Vaccaro (he cleans up everything) with hard-running tailback Malcolm Brown and very active linebacker Jordan Hicks next in line.
4. You need to check out a new book entitled “DKR. The Royal Scrapbook” by talented Austin author and former Longhorn cheerleader Jenna Hays McEachern. The attractively produced book includes some never-before-seen personal photographs that Royal’s wonderful wife, Edith, kept over the years. A few of my favorites were black-and-white shots of the couple as grand marshals for the Fiesta Flambeau Parade in San Antonio and of Royal on the phone in the kitchen. Edith says he’s always on the phone. It’s a great read with revealing insights into their personal lives, including moments of triumph and tragedy.
5. Got to love that Mike Leach is back in the game. Even though his debut with Washington State did not go well against BYU — whose coach, Bronco Mendenhall, is a rising star — a Leach team failed to score a touchdown for only the third time in his 10-plus seasons. Leach’s halftime evaluation of his quarterback, Jeff Tuel, was vintage pirate. Asked to rate his play, Leach said, “Average.”
6. So much for Baylor’s return to mediocrity. The Bears swarmed the SMU Mustangs in their opener Sunday night. Art Briles has produced five firstround picks since 2009. Glad I stuck Baylor in my Top 25 poll.
7. My fantasy team is very top-heavy. My sleeper pick is either Chargers running back Ronnie Brown or Titans receiver Nate Washington. In a bit of a shock, Broncos receiver Eric Decker went for a higher price than the guy throwing to him, Peyton Manning. While Eli Manning is my starting quarterback, I had no money left by the end of our auction and settled for (ouch) Mark Sanchez. It was either he, Christian Ponder or Brandon Weeden.
8. Count me among those who were disgusted by Maurice Jones-Drew’s monthlong holdout before he capitulated and reported to the Jaguars’ camp on Sunday. I don’t begrudge anyone for maximizing his leverage and trying to make as much money as he can, but the Jacksonville running back had not one, but two, years left on his contract and will make $4.45 million this season and $4.95 million next year. Excuse me, but I’m not going to feel sorry for him. You agree to a contract, you live up to your word.
9. Watched “Cowboys & Aliens” on the tube. Olivia Wilde couldn’t even save this movie. Very tame summer fare. Not a lot to offer. Four ducks.
10. One crazy prediction: Texas A&M will upset Florida.
