Georgetown senior Jake Hubenak threw for more than 4,000 yards, and Lake Travis’ Baker Mayfield posted impressive numbers for an injury-plagued offense. Leander’s Caleb Wood- ward, a Texas Tech recruit, rushed for more than 1,600 yards this fall while Elgin’s Te’Rel Simmons led the Wildcats deep into the playoffs with his arm and feet.
Connally’s Dajon Williams and Hays’ Caleb Kimbro earned scholarship offers from North Texas and New Mexico, respectively, while Westwood’s Bear Fenimore and Westlake’s Jordan Severt made successful varsity debuts. And Marble Falls senior Mike Richardson passed for a state-record 724 yards in a September victory over Boerne Champion.
In the end, though, only Grimm picked up a state championship ring.
“It was the greatest experience of my life,” he said. “It was so much fun. I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.”
Grimm opened the season in a battle with Ethan Fry to succeed Brian Hogan as Cedar Park’s quarterback. Grimm became the full-time starter and Fry was shifted to wide receiver by the Timberwolves’ fourth game, but Cedar Park scored only 57 points in its first five games of 2012.
In the sixth game, however, a 49-21 win against Marble Falls, Grimm threw for two touchdowns and ran for a score. He then threw for three touchdowns in each of Cedar Park’s next two games. On Nov. 9, he capped the regular season with a threetouchdown passing performance against Dripping Springs.
In the playoffs, Grimm threw for nine touchdowns, but those stats come with a disclaimer.
The 6-foot-4-inch, 180pound Grimm was pulled from Cedar Park’s 36-7 regional playoff victory over Alice after he injured his left ankle. Grimm then broke his right fibula against Lancaster on the
