Newcomers lift Rangers

New York offense comes to life in win over Pittsburgh.

-

Ryane Clowe, Derick Brassard and John Moore injected instant offense just hours after being acquired by the Rangers, and New York scored a season-high three powerplay goals in a 6-1 victory over Pittsburgh on Wednesday night.

Clowe came to New York on Tuesday night in a trade with San Jose, and Brassard was part of the package New York received on Wednesday in the deal that sent star forward Marian Gaborik to Columbus right before the NHL trade deadline.

Clowe scored two goals — after netting none for the Sharks in 28 games this season — and Brassard had a goal and three assists for the Rangers, who scored three times in the first period. Henrik Lundqvist stopped 26 shots in the Rangers’ highest-scoring game of the season. Lundqvist moved into second place on the Rangers’ career wins list with 268.

The Rangers won their second straight home game, scoring a combined 10 goals in the wins after a pair of shutout losses,

Flyers 5, Montreal 3: Wayne Simmonds and Erik Gustafsson scored late in the third period for host Philadelphia.

With the Flyers trailing 3-2, Simmonds tipped in the puck from the crease for the tying goal. Less than 2 minutes later, Gustafsson’s pass for Matt Read went off a defenseman and into the net past Carey Price. Jakub Voracek added an emptynet goal.

Etc.

Hurricanes: Carolina traded forward Jussi Jokinen to Pittsburgh for a draft pick. … Defenseman Joni Pitkanen will miss the rest of the season with a broken heel.

Sabres: Buffalo traded captain Jason Pominville and a draft pick to Minnesota for prospects Johan Larsson and Matt Hackett and two draft picks.
