Sabathia (knee) lands on 15-day DL

-

The New York Yankees’ injury-plagued rotation has taken another big hit.

Struggling left-hander CC Sabathia was placed on the 15-day disabled list before Sunday’s 6-5 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers with inflammation in his right knee. Manager Joe Girardi said he hoped Sabathia would just need two weeks.

Sabathia had right knee surgery at the end of the 2006 season while with the Indians. This is the only time he has experienced inflammation since the operation, Sabathia said.

Girardi and pitcher were relieved the injury wasn’t more serious.

“See the doctor tomorrow and go from there,” Sabathia said after Sunday’s game. “There’s no tear so hopefully everything will be all right.”

The move came a day after Sabathia allowed three homers in a no-decision against the Brewers. Milwaukee won 5-4.

Sabathia is making $23 million this season, the sixth in a deal that will pay him $161 million over seven years. He is 3-4 with a 5.28 ERA, with opponents hitting .301 off him this season.

Sabathia said he started feeling a tweak a couple starts ago. He said it got worse through his start May 4 against Tampa, when he gave up five runs in 32/3 innings.

New York is already minus two injured starters in Ivan Nova (season-ending elbow surgery) and Michael Pineda (back). Japanese rookie Masahiro Tanaka has taken over at the top in the rotation.

Nationals: First baseman Adam LaRoche was placed on the 15-day DL because of a strained right quad. LaRoche was the Nationals’ leading hitter in several categories and had five home runs and 21 RBIs before getting hurt. He joins third baseman Ryan Zimmerman and outfielder Bryce Harper on the DL.

Orioles: Baltimore activated Chris Davis (strained left oblique) from the 15-day DL and put catcher Matt Wieters on the DL with a strained right elbow. Davis went 2-for-4 on Sunday in his first game since April 25.

Marlins: Reliever Carlos Marmol (8.10 ERA) was designated for assignment and righthander Henry Rodriguez was promoted from Triple-A New Orleans.

Angels: Third baseman Ian Stewart left Sunday’s game after he was hit on the left hand on a swinging strike in the seventh. X-rays were negative but manager Mike Scioscia said it was too soon to say whether Stewart would land on the disabled list.

Red Sox: Third baseman Will Middlebrooks was scratched with soreness in his right hand after being hit by a pitch Saturday night. The Red Sox said they expect him to be available Tuesday.

White Sox: Bench coach Mark Parent said outfielder Adam Eaton (strained hamstring) will begin a rehab assignment this week with Triple-A Charlotte and will probably return to the White Sox on Sunday in Houston. Eaton went on the DL on May 3.

Rangers: Yu Darvish will not start as scheduled Wednesday at Houston. The right-hander will instead pitch at home Friday against Toronto.

Mariners: Seattle committed a season-high four errors in Sunday’s 9-7 loss to the Royals.
