Re: May 8 commentary, “New DWI policy imposes overly harsh consequences.”

As a former doctor in emergency medicine, I was dismayed at the oped by Wayne Vincent expressing his opposition to the recent zero-tolerance policy for police officers put in place by Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo. Having seen the physical mayhem and suffering caused by drunken drivers over my 26 years in medicine, I find it appalling that a representa- tive of law enforcement would argue that police merit a “second chance.” Even more galling is that he does so while also highlighting services available to Austin police officers that are not offered routinely to nonpolice residents, such as help with alcohol abuse and free transportation home.

What “second chance “did the victims of the recent South by Southwest have? Does Mr. Vincent have no sense of shame or responsibility?
