Nothing right-wing about conversation
Re: May 5 commentary, “An intellectual love story shows value of literature.”
After reading and re-reading David Brooks’ column about communion, I am unable to understand why this is labeled “from the right.” It was about the journalist’s remembrances of a biography concerning a chance meeting between two different people many years ago. Is it conservative to think our fastpaced, social-media-engaged society is better than person-to-person engagement with real facial expressions to exhibit emotions and ideas? And I wonder, also, if this lack of personal interaction is a large part of the reason our trust in others, including our government, has diminished. Perhaps communion is an outdated and conservative act, but as progressive as I consider myself, I’d like to see us all take a step backward.
