Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals had a goal and two assists, Viktor Tikhonov scored twice and Russia routed the United States 6-1 for its third straight victory at the ice hockey world championships in Minsk, Belarus.

The Americans outshot Russia 40-23 but 19-yearold rookie goalie Andrei Vasilevski made 39 saves. Justin Abdelkader of the Detroit Red Wings had the lone U.S. goal.

Russia leads Group G with nine points from three games, while the U.S. has six.

In the day’s other big matchups, Canada downed the Czech Republic 4-3 and France rallied from a 3-1 deficit to stun Slovakia 5-3.
