KEYE has wrapped up its monthslong search to replace soon-to-retire main anchor Judy Maggio.

Hema (HEY-muh) Mullur, a University of Texas graduate currently working in Denver, will make her debut on Austin’s CBS affiliate on June 16, anchoring at 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. alongside Walt Maciborski, sports director Bob Ballou and chief meteorologist Chikage Windler.

Before landing in Denver, where she anchors eve- ning newscasts for the city’s Fox and CW affiliates, Mullur worked for stations in Midland and El Paso. She was raised in Plano.

“A few years away from Texas were all I needed to know that this state really is home — from the people to the culture ... and the amazing food,” Mullur said. “I’m so excited to return to Texas and call KEYE and Austin home.

“It didn’t take long for the folks at KEYE to convince me that they have the kind of news operation that I want to be a part of. I’m looking forward to bringing Austin viewers stories that help keep them safe and informed.”

Maggio, who has spent her entire career in Austin, announced in February that she intended to retire after 32 years in the news business, turning down what she called a “generous” offer to extend her KEYE contract.

Her final day on the air will be May 29.

“Judy Maggio is certainly not an easy person to replace,” Mullur said, “and I hope to bring the same warmth and credibility that she has brought to Austin throughout her amazing career.”

Prior to joining KEYE 11 years ago, Maggio, 53, served as main anchor at KVUE, Austin’s ABC affiliate. She, too, is a UT graduate.
