MLB drops error for hit

Yu Darvish now lost his no-hitter in seventh, not ninth.

Yu Darvish’s recent nohit bid now officially ended in the seventh inning, not the ninth.

Major League Baseball overturned a controversial scoring decision from Friday’s game between the Rangers and Red Sox. Acting on an appeal by Boston slugger David Ortiz, MLB on Wednesday changed an error in the seventh to a single.

Darvish had retired the first 20 batters before Ortiz hit a popup that was ruled an error even though it wasn’t touched. Ortiz added a clean single with two outs in the ninth, the only other hit.

“I complain about (it) because it was going to be a second hit, but that was going to be the only hit of the game, I wouldn’t bring it up,” Ortiz said.

The popup dropped between Texas rookie second baseman Rougned Odor and right fielder Alex Rios.

The official scorer charged Rios with an error, citing MLB rules that a ball doesn’t have to be touched to be an error if a routine catch was possible.

■ The Rangers put lefthanders Matt Harrison (left leg) and Martin Perez (partial tear of his ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow) on the DL.

Rays: All-Star second baseman Ben Zobrist dislocated his left thumb in Wednesday’s win at Seattle. The Rays are not sure whether he’ll end up on the disabled list or be able to play through the injury. Zobrist hurt his thumb on a headfirst slide while trying to steal second base in the fifth inning.

White Sox: Infielder Jeff Keppinger was designated for assignment. Keppinger is in the second year of a $12 million, three-year contract and is owed $4 million this season and $4.5 million next year.

Blue Jays: Catcher Dioner Navarro was placed on the family medical emergency list and righthander Chad Jenkins was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo. Toronto also recalled catcher Erik Kratz and right-hander Neil Wagner from Buffalo.

Mets: Pitcher Dillon Gee was placed on the 15day disabled list with a strained back muscle.

Tigers: Right-hander Anibal Sanchez (right middle finger laceration) is scheduled to come off the DL and start Sunday night’s game at Boston.

Orioles: Manager Buck Showalter will miss Saturday’s game in Kansas City to attend his daughter’s graduation at SMU. Bench coach John Russell will fill in.
