QUARTER BY QUARTER

- — RYAN AUTULLO

First quarter: TCU, 13-0

Well, don’t blame the defense. Texas surrendered just 30 yards, but 13 points in a crummy first quarter undone by two breakdowns on offense and another on special teams.

Quarterback Tyrone Swoopes had two costly turnovers. TCU’s Sam Carter stepped in front of a pass intended for Armanti Foreman and returned it to the UT 24. That led to a field goal.

On the next drive, Swoopes coughed up the ball as he crumbled on a sack. Terrell Lathan picked it up and ran 40 yards for a touchdown.

A 53-yard punt return by TCU’s Cameron Echols-Luper led to the first three points of the game.

Halftime: TCU, 20-3

Back-to-back questionable calls went against Texas.

On third-and-12 at TCU’s 36, Swoopes scrambled to the right and dove out of bounds at the first-down marker. He was ruled about a half-yard short, which was upheld by replay. On fourth down, TCU nose tackle Davion Pierson moved early, causing Texas right guard Kent Perkins to false start.

Nick Rose salvaged the drive with a 47-yard field goal.

TCU’s offense, ranked fourth nationally, got on track on its final possession before the half. Quarterback Trevone Boykin converted three third-down passes, including a 38-yard pass to Josh Doctson to the UT 6.

Three plays later, Boykin found David Porter in the back of the end zone.

Third quarter: TCU, 20-3

Swoopes threw two more interceptions, but give the quarterback credit on the first one for finishing the play. Trailing from behind, Swoopes poked the ball loose from Carter. Texas recovered, but fell back 16 yards from the original line of scrimmage.

Later in the quarter, TCU’s Kolby Listenbee beat Duke Thomas and Mykkele Thompson on a jump ball for 40 yards. But Texas got the ball back when Dylan Haines picked off Boykin in the end zone. Haines couldn’t gather his footing and stepped out of bounds at the 2.

Swoopes ended the quarter with his third interception, this time to linebacker Paul Dawson.

Final: TCU 48, Texas 10

The 6-4 Dotson outjumped 5-10 Quandre Diggs in the end zone for a 22-yard touchdown and a 24-point lead.

Texas answered with a 73-yard catch-and-run to the speedy Foreman, who made a move around the left end and was off to the races.

TCU tacked on three more TDs, including a pick-six and a pair of runs.
