Carr back on field at Raiders camp
Derek Carr was a full participant in practice for the first time since April when he stepped back in as Oakland’s starting quarterback for minicamp. Carr had been dealing with an injury to the ring finger on his throwing hand.
“I’m 100 percent,” Carr said. “If I could be more than 100, that’s where I’m at.”
Bills: Guard Chris Williams is still recuperating from back surgery, and it’s uncertain whether he’ll be cleared for the start of training camp next month, general manager Doug Whaley said. The Bills signed Williams to a four-year freeagent contract in March 2014. He started the first three games of the season before being sidelined and eventually having surgery in October.
ODDS AND ENDS
College basketball: Texas says it has contacted the NCAA as the school investigates allegations of academic misconduct in its men’s program. The school issued a statement following a report in The Chronicle of Higher Education that mentioned potential allegations from the tenure of former coach Rick Barnes, now at Tennessee. The university said it “has no information that suggests” Barnes knew of or was involved in any academic improprieties.
College football: Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said defensive end Ishaq Williams still has some NCAA hurdles to clear before he is able to play for the Fighting Irish. Williams was dismissed from Notre Dame last fall after being investigated for possible academic dishonesty.
Tennis: Sam Groth of Australia rallied to upset third-seeded Feliciano Lopez 3-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (6) in the second round of the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart, Germany. The 66th-ranked Groth will face eighth-seeded Viktor Troicki in the quarterfinals. Fourth-seeded Gael Monfils of France used 18 aces to defeat Andreas Haider-Maurer of Austria 7-6 (6), 7-6 (5) for a quarterfinal with sixth-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber.
