Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo urged vigilance among his department’s officers Aug. 31 after the deadly ambush of Harris County sheriff ’s deputy Darren Goforth. Goforth was shot multiple times in the back of the head at a gas station in a Houston suburb after he had pumped gas. Shannon J. Miles, 30, was arrested and charged with capital murder. Acevedo said he had sent a message to officers about the importance of being aware of their surroundings and to remind them of the support they have from the community.

Claire Keturi: Stop being so surprised that officers treat people badly. Police officers act a certain way due to a power complex that comes with a position of authority. It’s science.

Jane Ring: We need our police. I may not like all they do or say, but they answer the calls to serve our communities. They need armed citizens to have their backs.

Noe Bustamante: Regardless of what some bad officers do, that doesn’t mean it’s OK to retaliate by actively murdering a law enforcement officer. That thinking is so backwards it’s astounding.

Natalee Flores Walters: Praying for this insanity to stop. There are good cops out there. The good always outweighs the bad. If you think I’m wrong, then next time you need emergency help, call a crack head, not 911. There will always be bad people in this world, police or no police. It’s social media and the news that picks and chooses what news you get.
