Sanchez out rest of year for Giants

-

San Francisco Giants backup catcher Hector Sanchez will miss the rest of the season after suffering a left hamstring strain and left ankle sprain.

Sanchez was hurt Saturday night while trying to beat out a sacrifice in the fourth inning of a 7-3 win at Colorado.

In other injury-related moves, the Giants placed catcher Andrew Susac, who has played through right wrist soreness for much of the season, on the 60-day DL and said outfielder Nori Aoki has experienced post-concussion symptoms and was being sent to Pittsburgh, where he was scheduled to be examined this week by a concussion specialist.

Mets: After a two-day uproar over his innings limit this year, pitcher Matt Harvey wrote Sunday on The Players’ Tribune website that he will be ready to participate if the Mets make the playoffs. He says he is communicating with his doctor, agent Scott Boras and the Mets for a plan that makes him available in October. The right-hander, in his first season back from Tommy John surgery, is not supposed to exceed 180 innings this year.

Astros: Starter Scott Feldman will be re-evaluated after having discomfort in his right shoulder while throwing catch on Saturday. Feldman left his start on Tuesday in the third inning with discomfort in his shoulder and had a cortisone injection on Wednesday. The Astros hoped he’d miss just one start with the problem, but are unsure when he’ll return after the latest setback.

Cardinals: Rookie outfielder Randal Grichuk was activated from the 15-day disabled list, but only to pinch-run for now. Grichuk missed 18 games with a strained elbow. Grichuk is batting .284 with 15 homers and 44 RBIs.

Marlins: Right fielder Giancarlo Stanton (left hand) still hopes to return to the lineup this season, although there is a possibility he won’t be back. Stanton left his first rehab game with Class A Jupiter on Tuesday after three plate appearances, citing issues with his hand, but he has resumed the rehab process in Miami.

Nationals: First baseman Ryan Zimmerman, who is batting .439 with six homers and 18 RBIs in his 10-game hitting streak, rested his sore foot but should start today.

Blue Jays: Toronto (7858) is the first team since the 2004 Astros to reach 20 games above .500 after having a losing record following the All Star break. The Blue Jays were 50-51 following a loss to Philadelphia on July 28.

Athletics: Sean Nolin on Sunday became the 28th pitcher used by the A’s, a franchise record.

Reds: Catcher Ramon Cabrera became the ninth player to make his first major league start for the Reds this season. Cabrera, the Louisville Bats’ MVP, was 0 for 4 but scored the first run of his career.

Royals: Johnny Cueto is 0-4 with a 9.45 ERA during a four-game losing streak, yielding 21 earned runs and 37 hits in 20 innings. On Sunday he allowed five runs in three innings, his shortest outing since June 28, 2013, when he left after one inning at Texas.

Cubs: Miguel Montero’s grand slam Sunday was the fifth by the Cubs this season, matching their highest total since 2009.

Diamondbacks: Arizona hopes second baseman Aaron Hill (pulled hamstring) will be back in the starting lineup by midweek.
