Braehmer retains title in Germany

Juergen Braehmer beat fellow German Konni Konrad with an eighthroun­d TKO to retain his WBA light heavyweigh­t title in Dresden, Germany, on Saturday night. Braehmer floored Konrad in the sixth with a counterpun­ch, though Konrad survived the count. Konrad quit with an eye problem before the eighth.

■ Former heavyweigh­t champion Shannon Briggs (56-6-1, 52 KOs) knocked out Mike Marrone (21-6) in the second round Saturday night in Hollywood, Fla. Briggs, 43, took the ring microphone after the fight and challenged current champion Wladimir Klitschko, who sat at ringside.

Basketball: Nemanja Bjelica made a layup at the buzzer to lift Serbia to a 68-66 win over Germany in a Group B match at the European championsh­ip in Berlin. Bjelica led Serbia (2-0) with 12 points. Dirk Nowitzki had 15 for Germany (1-1).

High schools: A San Antonio School district is investigat­ing after a football player ran into the back of a referee watching a play and another player, then dove into the official after he fell. Both players were ejected from the game. Pascual Gonzalez, a spokesman for the Northside Independen­t School District, said video of the incident was “extremely disturbing.”

Track and field: Dawn Harper-Nelson led an American 1-2 in the women’s 100-meter hurdles and compatriot Candyce McGrone won the 100 sprint at the ISTAF athletics meet in Berlin. Nelson clocked 12.82 to edge Sharika Nelvis by two hundredths of a second. McGrone won in 11.11, beating Marie-Josee Ta Lou of Ivory Coast by one tenth of a second.
