TEXAS’ PREGAME QUESTIONS ANSWERED

-

On four Saturday, questions we on presented the game. Here’s1. Did Daje Johns on how they played make out. an impact on special teams? No. At least Oklahoma State kicked to him — Cal didn’t — but he didn’t produce any of the return magic we saw against Rice. In fact, Johnson was relatively quiet in all phases. He had 10 touches — one carry for 9 yards, two catches for 6 yards, three punt returns (12-yard average) and four kickoff returns (25.2-yard average). 2. Dick Nick Rose show any lingering effects from the missed kick? No. Fans showed him some love as he trotted out for his first field-goal attempt. Rose nailed 41- and 46-yard field goals and was perfect on extra points. Maybe next week, the question should be whether Michael Dickson shows any lingering effects from his botched punt. 3. Did Texas finally slow the ground game? Yes. Oklahoma State had 46 carries for 103 yards. That’s 2.2 yards per carry. Texas will take that any day. The longest run from scrimmage was 16 yards, by backup quarterback J.W. Walsh. And running back Chris Carson, coming off his first 100-yard game, had only 39. 4.What did Jerrod Heard do for an encore? Heard was good, not great. No one expected him to bump himself off UT’s single-game yardage record, as he did to Vince Young against Cal. But he didn’t produce a signature play on Saturday, save for the 47yard completion to Marcus Johnson. Heard was sacked seven times, rushed for 48 net yards, threw for 119 and was picked off once.
