At Austin Mic Exchange, an open-mic night for local hip-hop artists, participants are given the chance to show off in front of a crowd that can be seen as unofficial judges. The event was created by Miss Manners, host of Hip Hop Hooray on KOOP Radio, and P-Tek, a local rapper, in an effort to build Austin’s hip-hop community.

BookPeople’s mystery-centric Noir at the Bar series features acclaimed Irish crime writer Stuart Neville reading from his latest novel, “Those We Left Behind.” Authors Gabino Iglesias and Mike McCrary, with their novels “Hungry Darkness” and “Remo Went Rogue,” respectively, will also leave you wondering about things that go bump in the night. A native Austinite now based in New York, the virtuosic and original painter Natalie Frank brings a wholly fresh, and feminist, take on the famous German fairy tales collected and written down by the Grimm brothers.
