UT MEN’S GOLF TEAM TIES FOR FIRST AT GEORGIA TOURNAMENT
Women’s soccer team drops home game to W. Virginia.
Texas senior Gavin Hall shot a 63 in the final round to help the Longhorns move up six spots and tie for first place with Virginia at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Sunday in Alpharetta, Ga., outside of Atlanta.
Texas began the final round in sixth place at 3 under par and shot an 11-under 277 i n the final round to finish at 8 under and win its first team championship this season.
Hall made nine birdies, including five on the front nine, with no bogeys and tied for fourth at 9 under. His 63 was the lowest round shot by a Texas Longhorn go l f e r si n c e Br a n d o n Stone’s 63 in 2012.
Four Longhorns shot even par or lower Sunday.
UT’s Doug Ghim birdied the final three holes to finish with a 71 and placed third at 7 under. He ended up two stokes behind co-medalists Jimmy Stanger of Virginia and Max McGreevy of Oklahoma.
Longhorn Steven Chervony shot his best round of the tournament Sunday, a 1-under 71, after shooting 17 over through the first two rounds. Texas’ Taylor Funk also carded his best round of the weekend, a 72, and finished at 8 over.
Texas ju n i o r Sc o t t i e Scheffler shot 1 over in the final round and tied for 16th at 1 under.
Soccer: Carla Portillo’s goal in the 79th minute gave top-ranked West Virginia a 1-0 victory over Texas at Myers Stadium.
The Mountaineers (15-1-1, 7-0 Big 12) extended their conference unbeaten streak to 20-0-2, a Big 12 record, and have won eight straight. West Virginia clinched its fifth straight Big 12 championship earlier this week.
Goalie Paige Brown and the Texas defense held the Mountaineers to their lowest shot total this season, and Brown finished with three saves. Texas (8-8-1) dropped to 1-5-1 in Big 12 play.
Women’s tennis: Senior Neda Koprcina advanced to finals of the ITA Texas Regional Championships with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Texas Tech’s Gabriela Talaba at the semifinals in Waco.
Koprcina will face Baylor’s Blair Shankle in the final Monday. Shankle topped sixth-seeded Rachel Pierson of Texas A&M 6-2, 6-3 in the semis.
Men’s tennis: Freshman Yuya Ito was eliminated in the semifinals of the ITA Texas Regional Championships by second-seeded Jolan Cailleau of Texas Tech in Fort Worth.
Ito defeated Baylor’s Jimmy Bendeck 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals before falling to Cailleau 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Texas sophomore Harrison Scott retired in the first set of his quarterfinal match against TCU’s Guillermo Nunez because of an illness.
