SMU sweeps NCAA opener

UT hosts national volleyball tourney at Gregory Gym.

The SMU Mustangs made it a clean sweep over the Texas A&M Aggies with a 25-23, 25-23, 25-18 win in the first round of the NCAA volleyball tournament at Gregory Gym on Friday.

Katie Hegarty led the Mustangs with 14 kills, and Janelle Giordano and Kristen Stehling added 10 kills apiece. Giordano also blocked six shots.

The Aggies were led by Hollan Hans, who had 13 kills. Jazzmin Babers and Kaitlyn Blake each had 11 kills in the losing effort.

With the third set tied at 10-all, the Mustangs closed out the match with a 15-8 run to advance to the second round. At 7 p.m. Saturday, they’ll face the winner of Texas’ match late Friday against UT-Rio Grande Valley.

Swimming: The Texas women’s swimming team took down three school records and the men posted two of the nation’s best times in the Texas Invitation­al at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center on Thursday night.

Madisyn Cox swam the 200-yard individual medley in 1 minute, 52.83 seconds for her first individual school record. The previous record of 1:58.33 was set by Kathleen Hersey at the 2009 NCAA Championsh­ips. Cox posted the nation’s fastest time this season in the preliminar­y round before improving on her time by more than a second.

Tasija Karosas swam a 51.08 in the 100 backstroke leg of the 400 medley relay to set a school record. Her first leg helped the Longhorns break the school record with a 3:29.77 finish. Cox finished the breaststro­ke in 59.20 before Remedy Rule swam the butterfly in 51.95. Rebecca Millard completed the freestyle anchor leg in 47.54.

The quartet broke the mark of 3:30.43 set at this year’s Big 12 Championsh­ips.

In men’s action, the Longhorns took three wins on the day.

Clark Smith swam a 4:11.20 in the 500 freestyle to edge out Stanford’s Grant Shoults and post the country’s top time this season.

The Longhorns started the night with a season-best finish in the 200 freestyle relay. Tate Jackson, Brett Ringgold, John Shebat and Jack Conger teamed up for a 1:16.73.

Texas took another victory in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:05.63. Shebat, Will Licon, Conger and Ringgold teamed up to post the NCAA automatic qualifying time.

The Longhorns will continue Texas Invitation­al action at 9 a.m. Saturday, with finals scheduled for 4 p.m. The Longhorn Network will have coverage of the finals.

On Friday, UT freshman diver Grayson Campbell took fifth place in the one-meter event at the FINA World Junior Diving Championsh­ips in Kazan, Russia. He had the best finish for an American, scoring 504.70 points.
