Three swimmers shatter records

Joseph Schooling set a Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championsh­ip record to highlight a big day for the Longhorns at the Jamail Texas Swimming Center on Thursday.

Schooling broke the UT and Big 12 records in the 50 freestyle final with a swim clocked at 18.76 seconds. His new mark breaks an 8-yearold record set by Jimmy Feigen (18.84). Schooling’s per- formance followed record-set- ting swims by Texas’ Madisyn Cox and Joanna Evans earlier in the day.

UT’s Will Licon ended up edging out teammate John Shebat in the 200 IM, finishing in 1:42.35. Shebat took sec- ond in 1:42.99 after qualifying first in the event earlier Thursday.

The Longhorns’ Rebecca Millard won the 50 freestyle final in 22.03, three-tenths of a second faster than freshman teammate Claire Adams.

UT’s Meghan O’Brien won the women’s 1-meter diving final with 338.80 points, followed by teammate Alison Gibson with 327.00 points. Texas’ Sofia Rauzi placed fourth in the final.

Texas’ 400 medley relay teams closed out the night with victories. Tasija Karosas, Cox, Remedy Rule and Millard finished the race in 3:31.05, the fifth-fastest time in UT history. The men’s team — She- bat, Licon, Schooling and Conger — finished in 3:05.33, the eighth-fastest time in school history.

Friday’s preliminar­y action was highlighte­d by the 100 fly and 400 IM. Schooling swam the 100 fly in 45.44 as the top qualifier. Cox finished the 400 IM in 4:10.42 to take the top spot in the prelims. Licon qualified with the best time in the men’s event at 3:44.39.

Lauren Case swam 52.13 in the women’s 100 fly as the best qualifier.

Smith and Quinn Carrozza qualified at the top of the 200 freestyle events.

Jordan Surhoff had the best women’s prelim time in the 100 breaststro­ke at 1:01.15.

Claire Adams was the best qualifier in the women’s 100 backstroke, with a time of 51.98. Shebat qualified as the top man in 47.12.

Grayson Campbell scored 449.95 points in the men’s 3-meter diving prelims, and Gibson was the top women’s qualifier with 346.80 points.

Softball: The Longhorns made it three straight wins at the Mary Nutter Classic in Cathedral City, Calif., when they defeated Bethune-Cook- man 9-1 Friday afternoon.

Bekah Alcozer went 3 for 4 with her third home run of the season and four runs batted in to lead Texas.

The Longhorns (10-3) had 12 hits and scored four runs in the fourth before adding five more in the seventh.

Paige von Sprecken (3-0) picked up the win as she allowed one unearned run on four hits through six innings. Sabrina Anguiano (0-2) suffered the loss for Bethune-Cookman (1-12).

On Thursday, a six-run sixth inning helped Texas take a 10-3 win over Missouri in UT’s second game at the Mary Nutter Classic.

Tiarra Davis drove home Kelli Hanzel in the top of the sixth to make it 5-3 before Alcozer hit a grand slam to put the Longhorns up by six runs. Alcozer finished the game 1 for 2 with a home run and five RBIs. She also drew a bases-loaded walk in the third inning.

Davis (1-2) picked up the win, allowing one earned run on seven hits through seven innings. She struck out seven and walked six. Cheyenne Baxter (1-1) took the loss as she allowed two runs on no hits through three innings. She walked four, hit a batter and threw a wild pitch.

The Longhorns scored a run in each of the final two innings to secure a 4-3 win over Notre Dame in their tournament opener Thursday.

Mickenzi Krpec’s single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh brought Celina Felix home for the win.

Devon Tunning hit her third home run of the season in the first inning to give the Longhorns a 2-0 lead before Notre Dame rallied to tie the game in the seventh. Tunning finished 2 for 4 with a run scored and two RBIs.

Stephanie Wong and Reagan Hathaway each scored runs for Texas.

Notre Dame (4-6) scored in each of the second and third innings to tie it.

Texas took a 3-2 lead in the sixth when Alcozer singled and an error allowed Hathaway to score.

Brooke Bolinger (3-0) didn’t allow a hit in two-thirds of an inning of relief and picked up the win.

Rachel Nasland (0-3) pitched 6⅓ innings and allowed four runs, three earned, on four hits as she was hit with the loss.
