Texas State’s two-month wait to get a football commitment ended Wednesday when Tyler Junior College safety Brandon Johnson pledged to the Bobcats.

He’s the first commitment for the 2018 class since three pledges — Wylie quarterback Stacy Conner, Waxahachie offensive tackle Jack York and San Marcos guard Alex Costilla — withdrew their commitments this spring.

Johnson visited Texas State last weekend, touring the facilities and meeting with coach Everett Withers. Texas State was the only school to offer him a scholarship.

At Texas State he’ll reunite with two former teammates from Dallas Skyline — center Aaron Brewer and fellow safety Markeveon Coleman.

“I just feel real comfortable coming in with them already there,” Johnson said.

He will have two years of eligibility at Texas State.

Football team hosting recruits: Thirty-two high school recruits are expected on campus this weekend for Texas State’s annual Party in the Park event. Last year it yielded four commitments.

Defensive linemen make up the biggest group attending, with tackles Jaxon Player (Waco Midway), MarQuise Conchola (College Station), Scale Igiehon (Del Valle), Derrick Shaw (Broken Arrow, Okla.) and Trevor Lawrence (Whitehouse), along with ends Jake Lynch (Fort Bend Travis), Steven Shaw (Manvel) and D’Emrick Bradford-Thomas (Carrollton Creekview). Linebackers Jace Waters (Allen), Cameron Wilkins (Del Valle) and Kevyon Davis (Ennis) will also be there, along with corners Prudy Calderon (San Marcos), Austin Deason (Pearland) and Chris McDonald (Ennis). And four safeties are expected — Allen’s trio of Taj Bickham, CJ Johnson and Levon Jones, plus Bowie’s Pierce Withers, the son of the Bobcats coach.

Offensive linemen attending will be Drake Centers (Tatum), Kyler Cooks (Liberty-Eylau), X’Zavea Gadlin (Mansfield Summit), Jalen Momerelle (Manvel), Spencer Burford-Watts (San Antonio Wagner) and Peyton Fifield (The Woodlands). Tight ends Henry Teeter (San Angelo Central), Ben Redding (Friendswood) and Bryce Wempa (Tyler Junior College) will be there, along with receivers Blake Argon (Stephenville), Andrew McGowan (Sinton), Peyton Sawyer (Houston Clear Springs) and Malik Jackson (Lufkin). Dallas Wilson’s Cade Fennegan will be the only quarterback visiting this weekend. He is one of three attendees who don’t hold an offer from Texas State, along with McDonald and Wempa.
